Rugby Shield 2008
Queensland
Country Heelers vs Melbourne Axemen
It's happened! And Queensland Country
Heelers paid us by winning over the Axemen 37-7 in a well fought and
high level game of rugby.
The Heelers ruled the first half, scoring
two penalties and a converted try under the posts for a 13-0 halftime
lead. After the break, two more tries put the Heelers ahead 23-0 before
Melbourne got on the board with a try of their own. Queensland Country
replied with their final try and a win of 37-7. We thank both teams
and management, the ARS, the QRU, the TDRU, our sponsors and supporters
and all club members who helped put on this great day of rugby.

Locals and visitors to
the historic gold mining town of Charters Towers will be treated to
a sporting and cultural bonanza during the 2008 May-day weekend. Charters
Towers Rugby Union will be hosting the first round of the Australian
Rugby Shield on the 3rd May between Queensland Country Heelers
and the Melbourne Axemen with the weekend also coinciding with
the annual Charters Towers Country Music Festival which will be held
at the show grounds from May 2 to May 4.
The Charters Towers Rugby
Club welcomes both teams to Charters Towers and is honoured to be the
home venue for the Heelers and to showcase what will no doubt be a very
fast and expansive game of rugby, played at a very high level. Local
players, supporters and the community are encouraged to stay on after
the game to rub shoulders with the best rugby players from Queensland
Country.
Charters Towers and Townsville
businesses have been fantastic, pledging their support for this event.
Three TDRU games and a Walla Rugby presentation complement the ARS match.
The rugby afternoon starts at 2:30 pm, the ARS match kicks off at 4:00.
