Junior Rugby 2008Grand Final WE WON Eagle Boys Bulls (12) - Grammar Black (8) Absolute ultimate feeling! A team win! 12 - 8 The Eagle Boys U16 Bulls are 2008 Premiers of Townsville Districts Rugby Union....go on soak it up. These boys are little champions, they are all my heroes. I know its sad but I'm still a bit excited...I've fallen in love with Rugby! 3 weeks ago after we lost to Grammar Black I quoted from Ben Tune " To win you've got to be both prepared and willing to do whatever it takes to win. That usually means the contest comes down to a war of desire between you and you opponent because you can bet they are just as prepared as you are." Guess we won the war of desire... (click on pictures for larger images) Under 16 Grand Final Report The Charters Towers Eagle Boys Under 16 Rugby Union team captured the respect and support of the Townsville District Rugby Union Competition when they defeated Grammar School 12-8 on Saturday. The game was played at a frenetic pace from the first whistle that never diminished until the final whistle at fulltime. Grammar continually threatened the Bulls line but the lads held hard and kept them out. The Bulls had limited possession in the first half but made some telling runs that put Grammar under some pressure only to fall short on the last phase of play, and so the first half remained nil all. Coaches, Managers, and supporters were kept on the edge of their seats for the next 25 minutes as the two sides battled it out for the Premiership trophy. Grammar scored first after the ball had been lost at the scrum base and the opposition half back pounced, the conversion was unsuccessful so the score was 5 nil. Charters Towers again defended like Spartans but a late penalty for a dangerous tackle saw Grammar skip to an 8 point lead which meant the Bulls had to score twice. The Bulls seem to lift and rise to the occasion with a great try down the far touch line but the kick was unsuccessful leaving the score 8-5 in favour or the Grammar School. After injuries had taken toll on some of the Bull’s key players the boys had to regroup and go forward and that is exactly what they did and continued to turn Grammar around and force them to defend. Both the backs and the forwards united to ensure that play kept going forward and maintain possession, which in fact was what won them the game With Grammar turned inside out and showing signs of fatigue the Charters Towers Under 16 Bulls delivered the final blow with only 2 minutes left on the clock by scoring a great team try that started in the Bulls half. With the conversion successful, it meant now that the lads had to just hang on and let’s just say that they kept everyone glued to their seats. Both Coaches Greg Smith and Ted Vinson were full of praise for the tenacity and spirit in which the game was played and the great encouragement on the day from parents, senior players and supporters who were treated to a great game of rugby that left nothing behind. Smithy and Ted . I have to mention a little bit of history. In 2006 we had some little boys...Tom Vinson, Taylor Smith, Digby Doyle, Ewen McLennan, Sebastian Phillott, Jimmy Blacklock, Conor O'Reagain, Kenny Trindle, Russell West, Zac Santo, Darcy Campbell and Stuart Pegler signed up with Ted, Smithy and Jo Vitelli to become the Inaugural Junior Bulls U14s.( Justin Bannister, George Stacey and Michael McQueen who all contributed in 2008 were also some Baby Bulls but weren't able to play in the Grand Final on Saturday) .These Baby Bulls went through the season and finished 3rd I think (not important because a fabulous foundation was laid) In 2006 the U14s became 2 teams, The U14s plus a few more and U16s plus a few more. The U14s had an absolute blinder year with a core of Baby Bulls and took out their respective Premiership. The U16s didn't fare so well but they loved the game regardless. 2008 saw the whole core team come back together as the U16s. We have some new and very welcome additions since 2006 Ben Walker, Blake Chaplain, Edward Buck, Dylan Stanley, Sebastian Mc Mahon, Tyler Bode, Jack Francis, Cameron Sheales and Snow Fredericks. So the Baby Bulls have grown and matured into the fine team we saw on Saturday and bring home the loot! Ted, Smithy and Norah must be bursting with pride. They have taken a few kids and developed them into fine young players both on and off the field. I am of course bursting with pride but I too am a Baby Bull (Bullette???) introduced to the game in 2006. Did I tell you...WE WON!!! We had a Celebration Gathering at The Smiths on Saturday after the game with much Pizza supplied by our proud sponsors Eagle Boys. Thank you Danny and Michael. Thank you Debby, Greg ,Taylor, Callum and Maddie. Thank you to the parents who made big sacrifices and long trips to share the day with their sons. Thank you to all the supporters who came along to game. The Charters Towers crowd was a sight.(Video sound suggests they were pretty vocal too!!) Thank you to all the people who emailed or sent messages of good luck. Thank you to Ron Edgar for my before game hug..boy did I need some reassurance. Presentation Night is this Friday and we're looking forward to a great night. If you haven't already let Norah or myself know if you are/are not coming please do so tonight or early tomorrow. Caterers need numbers. Did I tell you...WE WON! Go the Bullies Love my Rugby Cath Preliminary Finals Saturday 30 August Eagle Boys U16s (5) v Southside (0) WE WON! It took till the 6th last minute of the game for someone to score but we won!! Please check back soon for a more comprehensive report... BIG REPORT FOR A BIG GAME Charters Towers Eagle Boys U16s you little rippers we're heading to the Grand Final! The feeling of relief and excitement after the game on Saturday was indescribable. I think we won gold at the Olympics. I was wondering in the 2nd half why the seats on the bench were so flimsy with wobbly legs...designed to make us sit still I think. Ted, Smithy and I were in unison leaning away from tackles, taking the hits... thankfully the camera man filmed the real stars and not the officials on the bench. For 44 minutes we endured an excruciating nil all draw. Fingernails? What fingernails?
The Charters Towers Eagle Boys U16 Bulls Rugby Union were able to get on top of the Southside Team from Townsville last Saturday to book a place in the Grand Final against Grammar School. Supporters were treated to a nail biting match that was a great spectacle of rugby with both teams giving their all. Southside maintained 90% of possession in the first half. The Charters Towers team held solid in defence and kept their try line uncrossed with some great work by the outside backs. The opposition tried all they could to put points on the board but they were unsuccessful in all attempts. The second half saw Charters Towers regain some possession, making valuable ground and applying pressure to the Southside team, but were unable to score early in the half despite some great lead up work by the forward pack. Finally Charters Towers cracked the Southside defence line to put on a try scored by Russell West after some tactical kicking and continual pressure, the conversion was unsuccessful. A penalty late in the game to Charters Towers was unfortunately not converted but the Junior Bulls held hard and stayed united to win the match 5 - nil. Coaches Greg Smith and Ted Vinson were full of praise for the tenacity and strength that the boys showed for the whole game and said that they were now well prepared to take on the Grammar School this Saturday for the U16 Premiership. I could have made a Toyota ad when Russell scored that try! Oh what a feeling!!! Those last 6 minutes were almost as scary as the first 44 because a 5 point margin could hardly be considered safe. But the boys played like never before...probably the most exciting game of the season and from all reports they loved every minute of it. The crowd support from Charters Towers was a sea of orange and black. Amazing we drove for an hour and a half and managed to swamp the Southside supporters. I believe the crowd of Towersites was rather intimidating to the Townsville crowd!!! (Unintentional of course) Extra special thanks to Danny Boyden our proud Eagle Boys sponsor for making the trip. Special thanks to Ron Edgar. Thanks so much for sharing this with our boys.
Qualifying Finals Saturday 23 August Eagle Boys U16s (7) v Grammar Black (17) "The great courage of the game is to risk defeat in order to achieve victory. Some teams won't risk defeat until its staring them in the face and by then it's too late" Bob Dwyer Defeated we may be but we are looking for the next door to knock on. The Eagle Boys U16s went down to a well drilled Grammar Black in Townsville on Saturday. Fulltime score 17 -7. The boys were disappointed with themselves and bewildered by some of the rulings by the referee. But at the end of the day they were the ones playing the game. So chins up last Saturday is long gone and I know you all did it for me so I could have just 1 more game of Rugby for the season!! Grammar Black scored and converted a soft try in the 5th minute. Penalties piled up against our boys until they became confused about how to play the game. Grammar Black scored and converted again in the 15th minute. The first 15 minutes were marred by small mistakes that turned out costly and as the boys started to pick up intensity and play like a champion team as opposed to a team of champions Grammar Blacks 17 points (including a penalty goal) didn't seem as insurmountable. We had very little possession in our own half and limited opportunities to score. The couple of times when an Eagle Boys try seemed close we wasted possession. Perhaps Tim Horan said it all "Play the first 20 minutes as if you're behind in the last 20. In other words, attack as if you're losing - don't wait until you are." At half time they were given a reminder about the basic fundamentals of Rugby and a different team emerged for the 2nd stanza. The Eagle Boys U16 Bulls came out charging. By the end of the 5th minute Ryan "Snowman" Fredericks opened the tally for the Charters Towers Eagle Boys after some neat lead up work following a lineout. The team try was ably converted buy Tom Vinson. The boys played with renewed vigour and held possession in our half for the next 10 minutes when Russell West scored a try in the corner that was called held up. A make or break moment that knocked the wind out of their sails. They came close to the line several more times but just couldn't capitalise. Well done boys you did keep your cool when the chips were down and that is a special discipline. The intensity on the bench was incredible and Keith and James and I were emotional wrecks. Was great to have a near full squad of boys with 21 turning up to play the greatest game on earth. Special mention to Justin Bannister who didn't get a run but as always was a positive encouraging influence with an ever ready smile. Had a good crew of Charters Towers support. Many thanks to Jim Mitchell who came down to strap and support the boys. Hope they felt a little special getting their own personal strapper and first aider. Barb Madigan the Club secretary came down with the brilliant new Bulls banner to cheer on the boys. There were many parents including Ruth Landsberg, Debby Smith and Taylors Grandad, Stella McMahon, Jo, Neil and Mattie Fredericks, Erica West, Trish Buck, Mick and Kerry Clements.(and if I missed someone please forgive me my pre match nerves were butterflies turned into baby elephants doing somersaults! and I took less notice of the crowd) Of course our oh so loveable patron Ron Edgar was there. Thank you to James Buck, Jarrod Clements, Callum Smith and John Vinson who all posed as water runners so they could sit on the bench! None the less their efforts and intentions were greatly appreciated. A huge thanks to Keith Blaikie for stepping up to a challenge and taking on the coaching of the U16 Eagle Boys for this vital game in Ted and Smithy's absence. He also drove our bus with Stuart Pegler's assistance! James Doyle lent a hand in the coaching role as well. What would we do without so many awesome volunteers. I speak on behalf of the boys thank you so much Keith and James that must have been a challenge. On the way home we discussed changing training to Wednesday afternoon as many of the BTC boarders will be unable to attend on Thursday. The boys voted to be at The Bulls Grounds on Wednesday around about 4pm for those who can get there to do some game analysis and a spot of training before Ted finishes work. I've organised a couple of laptops and Craig has burnt several copies of the game so they can find the positives and work on them. Positive initiative and commitment are to be commended. We play either Teachers or Southside next week in Townsville at 12.30 on Saturday 30 August. It will great to have a full strength team again. Training is the place to be on Wednesday afternoon anytime after 4pm. I will be there. Ted will be there shortly after 5. Food for thought from Ben Tune "To win you've got to be both prepared and willing to do whatever it takes to win. This usually means the contest comes down to a war of desire between you and your opponent because you can bet they are just as prepared as you are." Love my Rugby Cathy
Saturday 16 August 2008 What a lovely afternoon of Rugby for the Junior Bulls on Saturday. Many thanks to all those parents who turned out to watch their boys play their last game in the TDRU competition. It was lovely to see about 5 of the "out of town" parents managing to catch up with their lads on their last game as well - thanks everyone for your support throughout the year!!! The end score of 48-7 was a true revelation of how much the boys enjoyed their game. I too, have enjoyed the season and am truly looking forward to the Under 14's in 2009. About 10 of our current players should stay in this team which is a wonderful nucleus for '09. Tries went to Quinton Miller (1), Callum Smith (1), Daniel Buck (1), Mick Emms (1), Dougie Rayment (1), Angus McQueen (1) and Jack Pickering (2). Conversions went to Zach Sellars (4). A big Welcome and thank you to Brendan Vitelli who filled a jersey for our last game! Brendan used to live in Charters Towers and would have been a mighty player for the Bulls but had to leave town due to his parents moving to Bris Vegas!! A well played game Brendan and we truly hope you enjoyed yourself!!! I think the smile at the end said it all though!! Brendan also received the Refs 1 point!! This is what Keith had to report...................... The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14’s took to the field on Saturday against Brothers Blue. The day took on special significance not only due to the fact that it was our final game of the season, but more importantly, it was the annual clash for the John Fry Memorial Trophy. From the first whistle, the Junior Bulls played with an air of confidence scoring quickly and converting pressure into points. The forwards pick and drive game developed well which allowed some quality ball for the backs to use. The scrum was again strong and managed to secure two wins against the head. In the tight play Ross Leggett, Callum Smith and Quinton Miller again provided a solid base. Daniel Buck created a number of opportunities with his strong running and always led from the front. John Vinson provided an excellent option at half-back with the unavailability of Luke Holdcroft. Dougie Rayment’s season continued to go from strength to strength as he provided clear directions to his outside backs. His running and ability to play what was in front of him was the catalyst for many forward charges. Angus McQueen, Jack Pickering and Zack Sellars all played well in the back line. Jarrod Clements continues to improve and provided some superb examples of stepping to beat an opposition player. The coach’s points went to John Vinson with one point. Ross Leggett was awarded two and Dougie Rayment with three. While the team is very disappointed not to make the semi finals, a can of soft drink and a warm meat pie provided by our kind sponsors, Arthur & Dianne Wright of A and D Auto Electrical allowed their depressive state to quickly evaporate. Finally, a special thank you needs to go to Trish Buck for her superb management of the team this season. Another special mention also goes to Ted and Norah Vinson, Greg Smith and Ron Edgar for their unconditional drive and support of Charters Towers Junior Rugby Union. Last but not least, to our sponsors A and D Auto Electrical who have been very generous in their support of the Under 14 Bulls. Keith And that about says it all...............Keith has been a truly wonderful and dedicated coach to our boys. They all have learnt soooooooo much from this man, who has many years experience under his belt. THANK YOU COACH!! The CTRUFC is privileged to have men like Ted Vinson, Greg Smith and Keith Blaikie take your children to another level in Rugby Union. They expect a lot from the lads but in return, the boys give it their all. Also thanks to Trish Buck as Manager. I'm sure she has no finger nails left. Thank you to our valuable sponsors; Arthur & Dianne Wright of A & D Auto Electrical. Your support has been invaluable!! Your invite to the Junior Presentation evening will be arriving shortly, PLEASE RSVP - asap. Yours in Rugby Norah
Eagle Boys U16 had a win with a forfeit from Brothers!! August 8 2008 A & D Auto Electrical U14 (5) Grammar Gold (22) The A & D Auto Electrical Under 14's played their 2nd last game of the season last night in Townsville. That's all our Townsville trips done and dusted!!! I'm actually very sad to state that - as that means that we will not make the final four on the ladder. Last night the Bulls went down to a well drilled Grammar Gold side. The final score of 22-5 did not reflect the intensity of the game. At the start of the game our team was told that Grammar did not want to contest the scrums (the second time this season) and also there would be no pick up and runs from the No. 8. We weren't happy about this, as the lads have been working very hard at training on their scrums and by not contesting, it brings about a different style of play/game. At half time the score was 10-0 to Grammar, but we were still in it. The boys (17 came down to play) went out with renewed vigour and intensity. Callum Smith was inspirational in the line outs winning most of the Grammar Gold throws. By the end, Grammar were throwing long every time, as they knew Callum was in their face. Captain, Daniel Buck played with his usual guts and determination and scored the only try for the Bulls. Our boys were put off at one stage by Grammar scoring off the back of the scrum, which was something we had been told by the ref not to do. Heads went down but not for long. Evan McGuire took the hit of the season and bounced back onto his feet. Three cheers went up in the bus for Evan and the smile couldn't be wiped from his face. Ryan Trindle also played some quality rugby and has really improved this season in these last couple of games. Jack Pickering played well at fullback while Brayden Wilks pulled off some hard hitting tackles. BUT - it was not to be our night. This loss put us out of the finals contention. From 20 games so far this season, our boys have won 9, lost 8 and drawn 3. Coaches points went to Callum Smith (3), Daniel Buck (2) and Ryan Trindle (1). Keith was extremely impressed and proud of the lads with the way they held their heads high after the game. Many thanks to Ronnie Edgar for running the line (we really need some fathers to help out). Ronnie's sure he lost about 3 kg trying to keep up with the play. Also thanks to Greg Buck for driving the bus home (as Keith had to stay in Townsville) and running the water. Our last game of the season is next weekend against Brothers Blue, right here in Charters Towers. If you haven't seen your child play, then this is the last time for this year that you may. The John Fry Memorial day is on and hopefully will be a cracker. There is a rumour that Brothers U16's may forfeit BUT this is yet to be confirmed........I'll let you know as soon as I know. Hopefully we'll still have our 3 games. Training is defiantly on this coming Tuesday night. The team photo will be taken up stairs in the rugby club at 5:30 sharp. All boys are to wear their Bulls rugby shorts and their bulls socks and footy boots. If you can't make it - you do miss out on being in the photo!!!! DATE CLAIMER: The Bulls Junior Presentation night will be held on Friday the 12th of September. The boys will receive their personal invite this coming weekend. Hope to see everyone there on Tuesday. Yours in Rugby Norah Eagle Boys U16s (19) Ross River (5) We walked away winners on Friday night in Townsville after a pretty tough game. Referees points went to Sebastian Phillott 3 and Tom Vinson 1. Ross River threatened our line so many times I was nearly hysterical and Ruth Landsborough is sure I burst both her ear drums! Three hearty cheers for the Charters Towers Eagle Boys U16 Bulls! CTRUFC Under 16 Match Report VS. Ross River Redskins The much anticipated match between Charters Towers U16 and Ross River proved to be an extremely tough match with both sides trying to out do each other. The first 15 minutes was all Charters Towers as they displayed great attacking flair that was brought about by a great forward platform that allowed the backline room to move. Clinical ball retention and at least 4 and 5 phases of play in possession allowed Charters Towers to dominate and run in several ties in the first half. The second half again proved a tough encounter with Ross River throwing everything at Charters Towers and through relentless pressure a try was succeeded. Charters Towers again were tested on character and resilience and again came up winners. Defence was the only let down of the night but the boys rallied late in the game to ensure another Charters Towers victory. Coaches Greg Smith and Ted Vinson were full of praise for the young bulls especially Russell West and Zac Santo for some great individual skills. But it was Blake Chaplain and Tom Vinson with 1 point each, Dylan Stanley with 2 points for the go forward and Seb Phillott with 3 points for a true flanker’s game as he was in everything. Next week will see Charters Towers U16 having a rest as Brothers are unable to make the game but the break will allow for some niggling injuries to mend but that will see Charters Towers U16 in the semi finals the following week. Bring on the semi finals and Go the Bulls! Ted and Smithy Any Mums (or boys) noticed they are missing a light green towel from a couple of weeks ago. I have asked the 'bus boys' but no one recognises it...perhaps we can auction it on Presentation Night! Which by the way will be Friday 12 September. Mark it on your calendars as a date not to be missed. The boys will receive their invitations in the next few days. Just in preparation the boys will need to be smartly dressed with a tie a necessity. Also boys could you start thinking about a vote for Players player, I'll need to know that in the next week or so. Please feel free to email me or let me know at training. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank our fabulous sponsors Charters Towers Eagle Boys for their support this year. Together we've been a winning combination. Thanks Danny and Michael! Keep an eye out for your invitations to The Presentation Dinner as well. Love My Rugby Cathy August 1 2008 A & D Auto Electrical U14 (0) v Brothers (25) I'm very sorry to say I was unable to attend the game on Friday night in Townsville. I really would have loved to have been there but had council commitments in Moranbah. Coach Keith Blaikie kindly did a report up for me to be able to pass on to you all. The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14’s came back to reality with a bang on Friday night, losing to a well drilled Brothers outfit by 25 points to nil. Although the score line flattered the Brothers team, Charters Towers inability to maintain quality possession and find touch at crucial points during the match were major catalysts for the loss. Brothers scored off a simple mistake in the first minutes of the game and held a 10-point advantage at the first break. The Bulls were unlucky not to score in the second half as they pressured the Brothers line with vigour. While the team felt very disappointed after the match, their commitment and effort could never be questioned. The front row of Patrick Brennan, Evan McGuire and Quinton Miller were outstanding against a larger Brothers pack and played their best game of the season to date. Mick Emms had another strong game playing out of position, filling in at halfback. The backs tried hard with limited opportunities with Dougie Rayment and Jack Pickering playing strongly. With only two games remaining in the regular season, the Bulls must win both of these games to keep their slim final chances alive. The coach’s points went to the ever reliable Mick Emms and Braydon Wilkes (who played his best game of the season). Both players were awarded one point. Two points went to Callum Smith who again worked tirelessly in the tight play and Quinton Miller was awarded three points for his outstanding performance. Many thanks Keith for this. As Keith stated, the boys did play well considering they had other problems to contend with. The BTC boys had their athletics day and all boys were totally stuffed!!! Luke Holdcroft had hurt his shoulder the week before and now it looks like he will be out for about 4 weeks. Not good news for our star little half back. Jack Clark hurt his knee in the game and also looks to be out for a couple of weeks. I'll follow up on these injuries over the coming week. A couple of the boys had other commitments and therefore couldn't play. It's been a hard two weeks for these guys and they have really worked hard. It will be interesting to see how the other teams have faired over the weekend to see how far off 4th position we are now. The boys play their last Townsville game this Friday against Grammar Gold. This will also be an extremely hard game but hopefully the lads will be up to the challenge!!! Training will be from 5:30-6:30 on Tuesday night. Look forward to seeing everyone there Many thanks Norah Eagle Boys U16s (36) v Northward SandCrabs (0)
Another wonderful Friday night of footy for the indomitable Eagle Boys team. Finals are looming and everyone is eligible to play in the finals. Some of the younger boys have tried and tasted a premiership and I'm hoping they can share the positive feelings and experience with the 'older of their team mates', for a change they have the upper hand and knowledge of experience and know how to face the coming weeks. CTRUFC U16 Match Report VS. Nth Ward 01/08/08 Friday night in Townsville CTRUFC U16 side came up against the North Ward Sand Crabs at the Hugh Street Grounds. The first half was a dominant display by Charters Towers with plenty of discipline and composure allowing for the majority of possession which lead to some great team tries. The forwards paved the way with some straight running and allowed for several phases of play that ended with sharp backline moves. CTRUFC dominated possession so much so in the first half that they put on 4 quick unanswered tries through some barn storming runs and deft backline play. The second half was marred by some confusing refereeing decisions and continual off side play by North Ward that effectively shut down the attacking force of Charters Towers. Strength and determination in the second half saw Charters Towers overcome the situation and put on more points including some individual by Jim Blacklock to seal the match 36 nil. Coaches points went to Seb Phillott (1), Jimmy Blacklock (2) and 3 points going to Ryan “Snowy” Fredericks and big welcome back from injury is George Stacey who had a sound game. All players did extremely well under the circumstances and displayed great character not to loose concentration against the tactics of the opposition. Ted Vinson Refs points went to Tom Vinson 2 and Sebastian Phillott 3. And George I was so glad to hear you wanted to come and play...running water gets a bit old hey! Once again true Bull spirit on the paddock. I was so impressed with the number of boys who turned up for training last week. I do believe that having numbers at training gave Ted an opportunity to do something's different and it was more enjoyable all round. Those that didn't make it found out the hard way that no training = bench play if you don't contact Ted or myself. Lets be fair, as we come to the challenge end of the season we all need to realise and appreciate that a team who trains together will play together best. July 22 2008 A &D Auto Electrical U14 (24) v Brothers Blue (7) We started our RUN TO THE FINALS on a TOP note last night when the A & D AUTO ELECTRICAL Under 14's took on Brothers Blue in Townsville and beat them comfortably 24-7. A very steady bus trip over, due to the rain coming down, saw us arrive in Townville to just a few spits here and there when we played. The grounds were extremely wet but the boys had lots of fun slipping around and getting as muddy as they possibly could. Some were even disappointed that didn't get to play in the rain (but I wasn't!!!) 16 players travelled over - with John Vinson, once again, making up the numbers to 17 to add 1 more to the reserves in case he was needed. All boys were "keen as mustard" to get on the field and play good rugby. Coach Keith Blaikie, was very impressed with the continual improvement of a lot of the lads and did state that going away to Brolgas had really improved the boys who travelled to the State Champs over the holidays. Josiah Phillott and Dougie Rayment stood out in attack, as well as master play maker himself, Daniel Buck. Dan was helped in the forwards by Quinton Miller, Kurt Smith and Patrick Brennan. Jack Clark, Harry Campbell and Evan McGuire made a lot of ground to the break downs with Callum Smith, once again, working overtime in the line outs! Dougie Rayment ran himself inside out and received some excellent ball from Luke Holdcroft at half back. Angus McQueen kicked a couple of lovely conversions whilst Zach Sellars and Jared Clements cemented the backline on one side with Ryan Trindle doing his best on the other wing. Brayden Wilks had a torrid time at Full back, unsure at times of where he should have been. Brayden did a commendable job of filling in for Jack Pickering but I'm certain he eagerly awaits Jack's return from holidays, so as to hand "full back" over to the keeper of the oppositions territory - Jack Pickering. Tries were scored by Quinton Miller X 1, Kurt Smith X 2 and believe it or not - John Vinson X 1 when he came on as winger in the last 10 minutes. A hearty congratulations to each and every boy who travelled to Townsville last night in the conditions that they played in - they all deserved to be mentioned. Refs points went to Daniel Buck (3) and Luke Holdcroft (1), whilst Keith's points went to Dougie Rayment - 3, Kurt Smith - 2, and Luck Holdcroft - 1. Many thanks to Charles and Penny Phillott, Ron Edgar and Callum Smith's grandad - Nev Ritchie for coming to support our young players!!! As well as Trisha Buck and myself!!!! You couldn't get a better training run then that for the boys, therefore the boys will once again just meet outside the back of BTC Friday afternoon at 4:00p.m. to travel over to Townsville to play Western Devils at 7:10p.m. 1 game down and 5 more to go until the end of the competition - here we come on the BULLS express to the Grand Final!!!! HANG ON........... Yours in Rugby Norah
Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (37) v Grammar Gold (0) Charters Towers U16 travelled to Townsville this Tuesday for a game against Grammar Gold as a catch up match that was unable to be played over the school holidays. The first half was dominated by Charters Towers with great enthusiasm at the breakdown and some hard determined running and again defence proved the key. Points came quick and fast early as Charters Towers dominated both attack and defence. The wet conditions proved a real challenge for both sides to maintain quality possession but also ensured ball security was the key to winning the match The second half Charters Towers seemed to lack intensity early allowing Grammar to gain valuable ground only to be denied a scoring opportunity by the junior Bulls. After some initial problems Charters Towers found their rhythm and were able to put some more points on board and complete another well earned victory with Charters Towers coming home at 37 nil. Players points went to Tom Vinson with 1, Dylan Stanley 2 and Ryan Fredericks with 3 Charters Towers now need to start thinking about the finals and that begins with the match against the fiercely competitive Southside this Friday again in Townsville and to build on the excellent team play and enthusiasm that they now enjoy. July 19 2008 Eagle Boys U16 bulls (10) v Grammar Black (5) Under 16 Bulls V Grammar Black Saturday afternoon rugby union at Dave Thomas .Field l saw the much anticipated top of the table clash between the Charters Towers U16 and the Townsville Grammar School U16 side. The first half was one of mixed fortunes with Charters Towers moving the ball early and making good territory only to continually lose possession because of lack of ball security which allowed Grammar to capitalise and counter attack. Grammar certainly made more of their time in possession but it was the Charters Towers defence that was the difference in those first twenty five minutes. Players seemed a little flat with some players making rushed decisions causing some disruptions and which was probably due to the extended holiday break. A try to Taylor Smith, after some great pressure off a kick chase, converted by Tom Vinson were the only points of the first half. The second half was a much better display of percentage rugby with the Charters Towers side maintaining possesCharters Towers U16 travelled to Townsville this Tuesday for a game against Grammar Gold as a catch up match that was unable to be played over the school holidays. Grammar scored a try off their scrum but were unable to convert and 5 points were all the points Charters Towers would concede for the rest of the game as the Junior Bulls applied more pressure. Definitive strong running by Russell West, Dylan Stanley with support by Ryan Fredericks gave Charters Towers the advantage in attack. Strong defence by Jack Francis and Zac Santo kept the Grammar backline well under control. Continual pressure on the Grammar try line led to several penalties being awarded to the Charters Towers side but rash decisions on some occasions by the junior Bulls allowed the opposition to get out of jail, finally a penalty kick was taken giving the home side the final score 10-5 Players points were 3 Russell West, 2 Dylan Stanley and 1 Jack Francis Coaches Ted Vinson and Greg Smith were pleased with the second half revival, full of praise for their team to be able to topple the number one side in the comp. This now puts the Charters Towers Under 16 Eagle Boys Rugby Union team top of the ladder! Ted and Smithy
June 21 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls (24) - Southside (19) The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14s ensured their season was back on track with an emphatic victory over the highly fancied Southside team last Saturday. The junior Bulls won by 25 points to 19. In what is best described as a superb team effort, the Under 14s always looked in control and scored some brilliant tries. The commitment and resilience displayed by the team really impressed coach Keith Blaikie, as many boys took to the field with a minor array of injures. In the forwards, Callum Smith again impressed with his leadership in the tight and was ably supported by Patrick Brennan and Mick Emms. Ross Legget played his best game of the season and was rewarded with the referee's points for best on ground. Kurt Smith and Quinten Miller made an impact in the second half and really lifted the confidence and spirit of the team. Daniel Buck led from the unfamiliar position of half back and provided positive direction to both forwards and backs. Dougie Rayment was a stand out at fly half. He dictated play expertly and ran to the line strongly which ignited his back-line with devastating results. Brayden Wilks in only his third game, played with confidence and was rewarded with a great try. Special mention also needs to be made of Zack Sellars who, under an extreme injury cloud, played a superb game at outside centre. The coaches three points went to Callum Smith, two points went to Dougie Rayment and one point to Brayden Wilks. The boys now have four weeks to recuperate until the season recommences in late July. Then it is "all aboard" on the A and D Auto Electrical express to the finals in August. Cheers Keith Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (20) - Southside (5) Under 16 Match Report VS. Southside 21/06/08 Saturday afternoon at the Rugby Union Sporting Complex saw the CTRUFC 16 side take on the Southside club from Townsville in what was a hard and intimidating match. The first half was a bruising affair with both sides trying to loosen up play through several hard earned forward raids but the defence from both sides held solid. Charters Towers defended their try line with such vigour and tenacity that at one stage for nearly 7 minutes straight without a break the opposition could not break through. Eventually both sides notched up a try a piece to go in to the half time break at 5 all after some great pressure out wide from Zac Santo. The second half started with same fervour as the first but Charters Towers stood strong and with some great pressure and determined running the opposition couldn’t contain the more powerful and committed Mickey Bulls. Great go forward play by Connor O’Reagain and Dylan Stanley laid the platform for Russell West and Ryan Fredericks to really dominate in open play. The scrum also held firm and was able to occasionally win a ball against the feed. Play around the paddock was in the forwards and was lead by Taylor Smith with some ferocious scrounging for ball and relentless defence. Backline play was sporadic due to some difficult defence from Southside but Charters Towers were some how able to still break the advantage line through Cameron Sheales and the ever present Zac Santo. Special mention in the backs must go to Blake Chaplain for composure under the high ball and Ben Walker for attacking the ball at all times. The Mickey Bulls came away winning 20 to 5 after some great team work Coaches Ted Vinson and Greg Smith said that this was one of the best victories after being kept contained for about 70% of the game but again it was the team’s discipline and desire to win through a combined team was greatly rewarding. Players points went to Russell West and Ryan Fredericks with 1 point each, 2 points to Zac Santo and 3 points to Taylor Smith. Tries were scored by Zac Santo, Ryan Fredericks and Russell West 1 each and Tom Vinson's boot added 1 penalty and 1 conversion. Ted and Smithy June 13 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls (0)-Teachers (31) After sitting at training on Tuesday night with Trish Buck counting 18 heads playing rugby for Friday night, we once again disappointingly had only 14 players by Friday arvo. One boy sick, one playing tennis, one grounded and 3 rugby league injuries,,,,,left us with 14 boys to weather the storm against Teachers West, but weather it we did. Many thanks to Johnny Vinson who played his first game of Rugby for the BULLS to endeavour to have at least 15 players on the paddock. John was one extremely nervous young lad but stood up to the challenge of taking the paddock with older players and held his own. A fine young Bull in the making!! Welcome to Brayden Wilks who also played his first game for the Bulls and did well. The end result was Teachers West 31 defeated the A&D Auto Electrical Under 14's 0. The boys started off shell shocked when they learnt on the bus that their captain, Daniel Buck, had been hurt at school footy the previous day and was ruled out for the week. Daniel still came along to support the boys as did Quentin Miller, who is also suffering a shoulder injury. These boys ran the water and encouraged as much as possible from the side line, both frustrated that they couldn't be out their beside their team mates helping out. Callum Smith stood up as captain for the evening and led the troops around the paddock. The first half, as stated earlier was unsettled and Teachers ran in 4 tries. There were some good patches towards the end of the half but the sound of the hooter couldn't come fast enough. The second half saw the lads play a different game. Although Teachers managed to score one try towards the end of the game, our defence held strong many times and the boys played hard rugby. Our attack also worked on some great phases of "pick and go" with Luke Holdcroft managing to get some excellent ball to Dougie Rayment in which Dougie ran hard himself or swung it out to his back line. Jack Pickering also had to step up a notch and ran some good ball, managing to crack open some holes in Teachers defence. The forwards back row of Josiah Phillot, Callum Smith and Mick Emms earned Keith's 1 point each as these boys worked tirelessly for the hour. Patrick Brennan also slogged it out up front. Dougie Rayment was awarded Keith's 2 points for his endless raids on the Teachers defence and Jack Pickering got the coveted 3 points. Dougie also received the Ref's 2 points. The boys should be proud of the way they handled themselves around the paddock in the 2nd half. They are such a young team and this year is a fantastic learning curve for them. Moving on to next week - the A & D Auto Electrical Under 14's take on Southside, here in Charters Towers at 2p.m. next Saturday. Norah Vinson Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (7) - Teachers (0) Tough encounter or what? The boys from Teachers looked like they meant business...a massive effort from the Eagle Boys to keep them scoreless. We presented with 21 of a possible 23 players and an injured Tyler Bode who loyally ran water to the boys. Thanks so much Bodey, we'll see you back fighting fit next week. Ted and Smithy had their work cut out rotating and keeping fresh legs on the paddock. Once again James Doyle was touch judge/linesman, thanks James. Referees points went to Ewen McLennan 1 and Zac Santo 3. Congratulations to the entire team you have put in a humongous effort in the last 2 games! CTRUFC Under 16 Match Report vs. Teachers West The Charters Towers Eagle Boys Under 16 Rugby Union played another tough match on Friday night against a committed Teachers West side in Townsville. The first half saw a lot of possession for the Towers side but a lack on attacking options and straight running saw the half time score at nil all. The forwards really stood up and maintained possession and were committed in defence to make sure that the Teachers side never crossed the Bulls line. Discipline at the breakdown and the ability to remain composed against continuous offside play was a feature of the Charters Towers side. Penalties marred the match but Charters Towers capitalised on poor ball security by Teachers to allow Zac Santo score off a timely kick by Tom Vinson to have the score at 7 nil which remained the final result. Coaches Ted Vinson and Greg Smith were pleased with the result as it showed another facet of the Junior Bulls play and that was discipline. Players points went with 1 point to Seb Phillott and Russell West for tireless effort across the paddock, 2 points to Tom Vinson for steering the team around the paddock and 3 points to Dylan Stanley for uncompromising play in both attack and defence. Special mention though to Stewie Pegler, Connor O’Reagain and Taylor Smith for keeping the opposition honest. Ted Vinson and Greg Smith Ron Edgar was there pacing between the U14s and U16s games and as always is the most supportive patron and role model these boys could wish for. He is often seen quietly going amongst the boys giving them a few words of encouragement or feedback. Chris and Noeleen Francis came down to Townsville to support Jack. Ken and Annika Mc Mahon came down and Sebastian took them home..first night drive. Sebastian you'll be able to drive the bus soon!! Ruth and James, Jo, Neil and Maddy Fredericks were there. Jo , you seem a little quieter this year?? Wait til our home games! Love my Rugby Cathy June 6 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls (5)-Grammar Gold (31) Last Friday night saw the Bulls Under 14's come up against a much bigger Grammar Gold side then when we last played them. They have certainly recruited well over the last month or so as we beat them 22-12 in our last encounter and we only fielded 15 players that day. On Friday we could only muster 14 players due to several players going home for the weekend. Actually, we were down to 13 players at one stage when Daniel Buck had to come off with an injury for a while as well. It does make it harder for the boys when players can't make the game and hopefully this won't happen again too many times in the future. At training, for the last couple of weeks, the boys have really started to get their act together and learn their specific roles within the team. Some of the boys therefore played out of position on Friday and this was evident in their game plan. BUT in saying that, each and everyone of them played their little hearts out!!! The end score was actually31-5 to Grammar Gold. This certainly isn't a score to be dishearten by and our boys will only learn from the experience. The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14 Bulls travelled to Townsville last Friday night to play Grammar Gold. In a very tough and physical encounter, the Bulls were beaten comfortably by a well drilled Grammar outfit. From the outset of the game, Charters Towers were under extreme pressure due to the fact that we could only muster 14 players. Given this fact, the A and D Auto Electrical under 14s never game up. They defended with aggression and made Grammar work extremely hard for their points. Coach Keith Blaikie was really impressed by the way the team stuck together and remained positive throughout the match. While the Bulls had their chances to build pressure on Grammar, they failed to retain quality possession at the breakdown and let the larger Grammar forwards dictate proceedings. As a result, the backs were given very little space and time to operate but looked extremely dangerous given the limited opportunities they had to attack. The Coaches 3 points went to Daniel Buck who played himself to a stand-still once again. Mick Emms, in only his third game of rugby continues to revel with his time in the forwards and was awarded 2 points. Zack Sellars worked hard throughout the night and was awarded 1 point. We look forward to training on Tuesday night as we will welcome back our full compliment of players and prepare for our next game against Teachers West on Friday night in Townsville. Cheers Keith. Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (12) - Ross River (0) Under 16 Match Report – Ross River Friday night saw the Charters Towers Under 16 Rugby Union up against the Ross River Redskins in Townsville. The first half was a great attacking display by the Charters Towers Eagle Boys team resulting in 2 tries and 1 conversion. Players to impress were the halves pairing of Digby Doyle and Tom Vinson who gave great service the outside backs Zac Santo and Taylor Smith which resulted in many attacking raids out wide. The forwards were dominant in attack as well with Dylan Stanley and Russell West proving very difficult to stop and the ever present Stuart Pegler gaining ground and possession. Darcy Campbell and Connor O'Reagain were solid around the paddock in support as was Ewen McLennan and Ed Buck, but it was the return of Ryan Fredericks from injury that saw fast attacking rugby once again come to the fore. The second half was a completely different story with too many penalties given away by The Eagle Boys which enabled Ross River to continually attack the Bulls line but it was the outstanding defence and the never say die attitude that kept the Ross River team scoreless. Fullback Ben Walker and wingers Blake Chaplain and Justin Bannister were kept busy with plenty of defence outside as again Ross River pressured the line without success. Coaches Ted Vinson and Greg Smith said it was a game of two halves but the Under 16 players were up to it and were able to hold on for a hard earned win. ‘it was our commitment in defence that won us the game’ Vinson said ‘ The boys never gave in and the Ross River team were tiring and they couldn’t handle us, a gutsy win but we still can improve especially at the breakdown were we need to settle the play a bit more’ Players points went to Stuart Pegler and Ryan ‘Snowy’ Fredericks with point each, 2 points to Zac Santo and 3 points to Russell West. Ted Vinson and Greg Smith GO BULLIES Congratulations EAGLE BOYS 12- 0! Relentless defence won the game. The return of Ryan 'Snowy' Fredericks from an injury carried from last season or perhaps even longer was a blast from the past and ignited a spark for the entire team. He teamed with Russell West and they were impenetrable. Coaches points were awarded to Russell West 3, Zac Santo 2, Stuart Pegler 1 and Snowy Fredericks 1. Referees points were given to Digby Doyle 3 and Russell West 1. Points scorers were Snowy Fredericks 1 try in the opening minutes, ably converted by Tom Vinson and Russell West 1 try within 10 minutes of the kick off. For the remainder of the game The Bulls had limited scoring opportunities and defended with all their might against a pack physically 3 times their weight! Believe it or not Russell was a feather weight and he and Snowy literally bound together, approached in unison and tackled in tandem. The entire game was edge of the seat nail biting stuff that silenced the crowd with the exception of muffled ohhhs and ahhhs in anticipation. Cathy West May 30 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls win - Teachers forfeit Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (37) - Teachers (0) The much awaited match between the Eagle Boys Charters Towers Under 16 Rugby Union and Teachers West from Townsville did not disappoint early in the game. Both sides battled for possession in a torrid and bruising first 10 minutes with Charters Towers scoring in the corner after some great lead up work by the forwards. Russell West, Dylan Stanley and Connor O'Reagain were able to take the ball forward but it was the tenacious efforts of Stuart Pegler who consistently pilfered ball and thwarted the attack of the opposition. The backline were at first well defended against but as the game progressed they opened up resulting in a great team try resulting with Tyler Bode scoring out wide after great passing and support by Tom Vinson and Cameron Sheales. The first half running was a little slow with the option pick and go with the ball not utilised to the full extent as the Teachers bigger forwards started to tire. The second half saw better controlled running form the back of the ruck as the Charters Towers forwards started to dominate led by Ewen McLennan and Seb McMahon who ‘shred’ the defence on several occasions. Relentless pressure on the opposition resulted in several tries to Charters Towers as the Teachers team could not keep up the pace and injuries had taken its toll on their game. Charters Towers run out eventual winners at 37 nil with coaches Ted Vinson and Greg Smith happy with the turn around in forward play and the free running of the backline but they reminded players to stay focussed and not become complacent. The match against Ross River this Friday in Townsville promises to be great game with both side fairly evenly matched. Ted and Smithy May 24 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls win - Western Devils forfeit Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (62) - Grammar Gold (0) The only fixture to be played on Dave Thomas Oval at the Rugby Union Sporting Complex was Charters Towers Eagle Boys Under 16 Bulls against the Grammar School Gold Team. The match was a complete turn around from the previous week as this Grammar side is the second string players of the Grammar School. Charters Towers were able to apply pressure from the kick off and put pressure into points as Grammar were unable to commit to the tackle which resulted in some individual swashbuckling runs by Russell West and Seb Phillott. The lack of pressure by Grammar lured Charters Towers into an undisciplined style of play that made scoring more difficult as there was no real structure. The second half however was a great display of well constructed forward play that allowed for the back line to show great flair in open running rugby. Digby Doyle back from injury was able to steer the forward charge led then by Stewart Pegler, Taylor Smith and Seb McMahon. The front row of Ed Buck and Kenny Trindle also held their own. The back line in the second stanza of play really was able to open up and finished off some sharp passing and deft handling by Tom Vinson and Cameron Sheales to give Zac Santo room to move easily to the try line. Tries also to Blake Chaplain and Justin Bannister with great support from Tyler Bode at fullback topped off a great game of running rugby display by the Charters Towers Team finishing the in front 62-0 Points went to Stewart Pegler (1), Seb Phillott (2) and Zac Santo (3) who finished with a personal tally of 26 for the match. Coaches Ted Vinson and Greg Smith were full of praise for the team but were quick to make sure the boys need to be on their game for the highly rated Teachers West next week at home. Ted and Smithy May 16 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls (12) - Southside (12) The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14's cemented their place among the top teams in the competition with a hard fought 12 point draw against Southside on Friday night. Southside boasted a number of Brolga representative players and provided one of the hardest games for the Bulls so far this season. The Under 14 Bulls continue to develop superbly as a team and produced some entertaining passages of play. The forwards dominated in patches and used their pick and drive game to great advantage. Callum Smith dominated the lineout and continues to press for further representative honours. Jack Clarke delivered his best performance of the year and gained much needed confidence in the fierce forward exchanges. Josiah Phillott, Patrick Brennan and Mick Emms were prominent in the forwards. While in the backs, Dougie Rayment did well under extreme pressure to ignite his backline, as Southside pressured the Bull's backline with unrelenting defence. As a result, the backline found it difficult to spread the ball quickly to the outside players. Angus McQueen again displayed the skills that have seen him chosen in the Brolga's Under 14 representative team. While a draw was a very satisfying result against the benchmark team of the competition, Charters Towers certainly had their opportunities to win the game but costly errors allowed Southside back into the game. Daniel Buck played another superb game and was awarded with the Coach's 3 points. Dougie Rayment received 2 points and Callum Smith 1 point. Tries were scored by Josiah Phillott and Angus McQueen with Angus converting one try. Although the A and D Auto Electrical Under 14's can learn a great deal from this game, their determination and progression as a team provides a positive springboard for the remainder of the season. Cheers Keith Blaikie Eagle Boys U16 (3) - Grammar Black (5) Eagle Boys Charters Towers Under 16 Rugby Match Report Friday night Rugby Union in Townsville saw the top of the table clash between Grammar School Black and Eagle Boys Charters Towers Under 16. The match was a tight event with no ground given in the early exchanges especially in the forwards with both teams very evenly matched. Charters Towers had phases of dominant rugby in the first half but because lack of intensity let Grammar take back possession. Eagle Boys scored first with a successful penalty goal to Tom Vinson after some great lead up work led by Stuart Pegler, Seb Phillott and Dylan Stanley inside the Grammar half of the field. The game see sawed with good metres gained by both back lines with Cameron Sheales and Jack Francis making breaks for Charters Towers but no-one able to capitalise and convert the pressure into points. The second half was another torrid affair with both sides making breaks over the advantage line but also conceding ground through the ball going to ground. Scrums featured heavily and the Charters Towers pack preformed well to hold the big Grammar forwards with Ed Buck and Ewen McLennan stepping up. Jimmy Blacklock had his game on and was everywhere organising the play from the back at half back and Russell West continuing to break the line. Grammar scored a late unconverted try in the second half and Charters Towers were unable to come back. Coach Ted Vinson and Assistant Coach Greg Smith were happy with the performance but were concerned with the amount of penalties given away and the lack of discipline shown by the more senior players which is something that will be worked on at training. The Grammar coach was full of praise for the performance on the Towers team and admitted the result could have gone either way and now the Charters Towers Team has some work to do at training and the coaches are sure that the team can only improve. Coaches points went to Jack Francis and Stuart Pegler with 1 point, 2 points to Dylan Stanley and Jimmy Blacklock with 3 points but all the team did not disgrace themselves. Well Done All! Ted and Smithy NEWS FLASH Eleven Players and One Shadow Player Named as Brolga Reps For the State Rugby Championships to be held in July A HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS to all boys who trailed today for the Brolgas, to attend the State Championships in Brisbane come July. Ted and the lads had an uneventful trip over, needless to say though, the trip home was very loud and noisy. Boys to gain selection were: 13's Division: Dougie Rayment Harry Campbell Josiah Phillott 14's Division: Jack Pickering Daniel Buck Angus McQueen 15 years: Tom Vinson Zac Santo Eddie Buck Digby Doyle - shadow player subject to fitness 16 years: Russell West Ewen McLennan The Bulls are very proud of each of these boys and I know they will all enjoy themselves immensely. Yours in Rugby Norah May 9 2008 A&D Auto Electrical U14 Bulls (51) - Grammar Black (0) The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14's returned to the winner's circle on Friday night as they demolished Grammar Black 51 points to nil. It was heartening to actually have a reserves bench as we travelled to Townsville with a squad of 17 players. In a very confident all-round team performance, Charters Towers were never threatened by Grammar. Testament to this fact, is that it took Grammar until late into the second half to pressure the Bull's own goal line. The forwards displayed greater intensity at the breakdown and managed to move the ball with greater pace from phase to phase. Luke Holdcroft was a revelation at halfback as he linked the backs and forwards with pace and precision. This quick transference allowed Dougie Rayment to really set the backs alight. The backs looked dangerous every time they had the ball and used the width of the field to precision, with Zack Sellars scoring three tries on his debut for the Bulls. It was extremely difficult to separate individual players from a great team performance but with the help of Paul Brennan and Ron Edgar, we came up with four players. We awarded 1 point each to Kurt Smith and Luke Holdcroft, 2 points went to Zack Sellars and 3 points to our 'Captain Courageous' Daniel Buck. Congratulations to each member of the squad on an outstanding performance and we look forward to witnessing many more throughout the season. Keith Blaikie Coach Eagle Boys U16 Bulls (55) - North Ward Sandcrabs (5) What an exhilarating night for both junior Bulls teams! We got away to a noisy start with the U16s in high spirits in anticipation of the game ahead. (Mind you the trip home was noisier!!!) And numbers...we were inundated with eager able bodies making a full bus, 20 players in total. The coaches job becomes much harder with so many boys looking to put their best foot forward. The first try was scored by Tom Vinson in the opening minutes and he set the precedent for a try feast by the Eagle Boys U16s. It probably wasn't the best game of rugby from the boys because they knew they were able to outclass the Sandcrabs and at times play became sloppy and too eager. When the boys did turn the ball over they worked hard and effectively to get it back. There were passages of good controlled ball and thoughtful play however some seemed to forget the basics of recycling the ball and hunting in pairs. When the boys played with rugby structure they made good ground, they need to work on the decision making process once they get into open space. Eagerness to score points over an under manned team was evident at the break down of play with forwards regaining composure to reset and capitalise on the play. The lowlight of the game was allowing The Sandcrabs to score a solitary try off careless play but it did send a wake up call to Eagle Boys not rest on their laurels and they picked up the pace accordingly. At the final whistle the score was 55 - 5. Dylan Stanley, Seb Phillott, Cameron Sheales, and Kenny Trindle scored 1 try each, Tom Vinson came home with the goods with 2 tries and 5 successful conversions and Russell West touched down 3 tries. Sebastian McMahon has become an emerging force with confidence and skills blossoming. He picked up 3 Referees points and 3 coaches points for his awesome efforts. Conor O'Reagain with his hunger for the ball ran strong and hard and picked up 2 coaches points. Tom Vinson and Stuart Pegler both picked up 1 coaches point for their persistence throughout the entire game. Russell West picked up 1 Referees point for consistent cleaning out and strong running up of the ball. I personally must say that Sandcrabs played admirably in the face of defeat and never once gave up or spat the dummy. They left the field in high spirits with huge smiles, that just confirms for me that winning the score is not the absolute goal of the game. Cathy West May 3 2008 U14 Bulls (12) - Brothers (20)
Coach Keith Blaikie has kindly written a match report this week as I was very busy looking after sponsors and ensuring that all our visiting Qld Rugby, both country and state employees were fed and watered at all times. A job I certainly enjoyed mind you, although I didn't get to see much of the game. We welcome Quinton Miller to our young team. Quinton played his first game of rugby and the smile on his face afterwards was brimming. Thanks Quinton for a job well done!! We hope you enjoyed your game. Therefore: The A and D Auto Electrical Under 14 Bulls lost narrowly to Brothers by 20 points to 12 on the weekend. Given that we could only muster 14 players due to the long weekend, the closeness of the match reflects the stoic resolve that exists within the character team. The boys' lacked continuity in the first half and let Brothers dictate play, particularly at the breakdown. In the second half, the Bulls played with an increased sense of urgency and enthusiasm, which resulted in some superb passages of play. Callum Smith produced a superb display gaining the coaches 3 points, with 2 going to Quinton Miller and 1 to the ever reliable Daniel Buck. Special mention needs to made of Quinton who displayed some sensational skills given this was his first game of rugby. While the boys were quite dejected after the game, both Ted and I were extremely proud of their efforts, particularly their second half display. I look forward to training on Tuesday where we can work on some of our deficiencies and build towards our next game this Friday night in Townsville. Regards Keith Blaikie
U16 Bulls win by Brothers forfeit
The Eagle Boys U16s Bulls were able to watch the skill and gamesmanship of the ARS match before warming up ready to take the field at 6.30pm. Unfortunately Brothers only had 12 players at kick off and forfeited before the start of play. A couple more players arrived later and took the field. Meanwhile many of the U16s Bulls donned Brothers jerseys for a short stint to make a game for both teams. The game is recorded as an "opposed training session" and a forfeit recorded against Brothers. Final score not that it really counts was 27 - 0. With tries to Blake Chaplain, Jimmy Blacklock 2, Taylor Smith and Russell West. Sebastian Phillott converted Russell's try. Coaches points went to Conor O'Reagain 3, Dylan Stanley 2 and Tom Vinson 1. Well done boys you all deserve a big pat on the back and you played well as a team. Some of them took advantage of the ice bath leftovers after the game. Thanks for sharing yourselves around and making a game of it. See you all at training on Thursday at 5.30pm. Go hard Bullies Cathy
April 25 , 2008 No doubt you all may have heard by now that the Under 14's suffered a lost last night in Townsville up against a very strong Teachers West side. Coach Keith Blaikie, nor I, could make it to the game due to the Columba Catholic College Theatre Restaurant, (this also took out 2 of our players) but the lads were in the capable hands of Ted Vinson and Manager Trisha Buck. Ted's report is: The A & D Auto Electrical U14's played gallantly with only 14 players and no reserves. Players had to work hard in both defence and attack with some great individual efforts, especially from Dougie Rayment and Dan Buck. New players, Kurt Smith and Michael Emms also displayed some great flair for the game. Special mention must go to Luke Holdcroft, Ben Gladman and Jarod Clements for standing up to their much bigger opponents. The team can certainly take away many positives from this game and with a full team will certainly be contenders. Ted's points went to Daniel Buck (3) Dougie Rayment (2) and Kurt Smith (1). Refs points went to Dan Buck (2). Final score 17-0. Trisha Buck would like to say thanks to all boys for coming away from the game still feeling positive and upbeat. They know they have plenty to work on at training and she is assured that they will do so.
Oh what a night! A big well drilled forward pack from Teachers could have intimidated The Eagle Boys U16s into submission but the desire to play hard and fair was evident and the players stood up countless times and put their bodies on the line in the name of the Bulls. With many of the BTC boys backing up very sore from a school league game they put their aches and pains on the back burner for a solid 60 minutes and dealt with the challenges from Teachers. Stellar performances were had by Connor O'Reagain and Dylan Stanley and earned them 1 and 3 points respectively, Ewen and Tom's direction of play was a standout and earnt them 1 and 2 points each from our stand in coach James Doyle. Blake Chaplain played extremely well as did Taylor Smith. James your wisdom of the game and care for the boys was greatly appreciated. Hope it was the perfect way to celebrate your 21st Wedding Anniversary!! Referees points went to Zac Santo 3 and Taylor Smith 1 . Midway through the first half Zac picked up an intercept try and converted it, to level the scores. At half time the score was even and the game restarted on an even footing. The second half saw a well weighted pass from Jack Francis to put Zac through a hole with a lot of work still to do to complete the try. He successfully converted this one as well. Charters Towers Eagle Boys Bulls U16s 14 to Teachers West 7. Oh I love it! A huge welcome back to Ben Walker for the season. He brings our numbers to a team of 22 which is perfect. Matty Pickering our Most Consistent Back in 2007 returned to run water and support the boys after a knee injury ruled him out for this season. Your help and support were very much appreciated and you are a welcome return to our team Matty. Ron Edgar our Club Patron inspired the boys with his mere presence..he even helps ease my nerves with his reassuring words. Thanks Ron. April 19, 2008 What a great game of rugby the boys had today!!! It was exciting to see them all run out of the dressing room in their A & D Auto Electrical sponsored Bulls jersey's....GEE THEY LOOKED GOOD!!! A BIG thank you to Daniel Champion for playing with the boys today. Dan's story is that he and his family have actually left town but happened to be here to finalise the packing up of their house and Dan scraped a game in. We are hoping Dan gets to "scrape a few more games in" before the end of the season (thanks Sharonmaree and Rob for his time and your efforts!!) And a BIG welcome to Jack Clarke for joining the team today. Although, at times, Jack certainly looked a little lost, he did everything he possibly could to help the BULLS to another WIN today. Yep, that's right 22-14 to our young team over Grammar School Gold. Not an easy job at all and the lads worked very hard for every point scored. Tries went to the "ever ready" Jack Pickering (scoring 3 mind you Leigh!!!) and 1 try to Angus McQueen. Angus converted a try as well. Refs points went to EL CAPTAIN Dan Buck, who, as always, is out to lead from the front and 1 point to Angus McQueen. Coach Keith Blaikie gave his points to Dougie Rayment (3) Josiah Phillott (2) and Angus McQueen and Harry Campbell (1each). In closing - you all have every reason to be very proud of your boys today - they were inspirational against a real threat in Grammar Gold. GO THE BULLS Norah What a great game of rugby the boys had today!!! It was exciting to see them all run out of the dressing room in their EAGLE BOYS sponsored Bulls jersey's....GEE THEY LOOKED GOOD!!! A BIG welcome back to Digby Doyle who made his come back after 11 months off through a shoulder injury (happened in a school LEAGUE game last year!!) Digby, although nervous to start with, shone through and play superb rugby as scrum half. The final score of the day was 22-12 to the BULLS. Another great win and hard fought. Ross River brought some big fellas up front to try and do the job for them but our forwards handled them very well. Conor O'Reagain and Dylan Stanley took the ball forward at every opportunity. Taylor Smith also put in a blinder. Tries went to Russell West (2) and Jimmy Blacklock (2) with Jimmy also converting a try. Refs points went to Conor (3) and Russell (1). Ted gave his 3,2,1 points to Taylor (3), Jimmy (2) and Stu Pegler (1). A big improvement across the park though from all players.
In closing - looking forward to catching up with the boys on Thursday at training from 5:30 onwards. GO THE BULLS Norah March 18, 2008 Winners are grinners and boy did we have some grinners! After the disappointment of a forfeited game on Saturday it was a pleasure to take 19 of the U16 Eagle Boys Rugby players to Townsville Tuesday evening and came home victorious against a very strong Southside team. Final score 19 -0. It was a physically hard game as their forward pack was more than up to the challenge. Our drive , determination and team skills defended our line countless times. Jimmy Blacklock scored 2 tries and Dylan Stanley stood up and said "I am a Player" and touched a try down in flamboyant fashion that looked more like gymnastics. Zac Santo converted twice. All of the boys dug deep and put their bodies on the line to keep the opposition scoreless. Coaches points went to 3 Jimmy Blacklock, 2 Dylan Stanley and Russell West and 1 for Tyler Bode. Ewen McLennan came home with 2 points from the referee. It must be told that the staff at Hungry Jacks paid a huge compliment to the boys when it came time for Russell to buy shares!!! and the rest of the team get a bite to eat. They commented that the boys were the most patient well behaved group of boys to celebrate a footy win in their restaurant. Thank you Mums and Dads for instilling those manners in your boys. It is indeed a pleasure to take them places. Training will go on through the holidays for those boys who can make it, same time same place. Love to see you there. For all the boarders be safe, stay fit and we'll see you next term. Cathy West March 15, 2008 A&D Auto Electrical Under 14s (44) - Grammar School Black (5) A huge day in Townsville resulted in some wonderful rugby for our young A&D AUTO ELECTRICAL Under 14's. This outing certainly proved a popular one for the lads with a win over Grammar School Black 44-5..............YES that's right - 44-5!!!!!!!!!! Captain of the team - Daniel Buck - had a true "Captain's knock" scoring 3 tries and really leading from the front and with plenty of example. Well done Bucky!!! He also managed to pick up the coach's 3 points for the day - and boy were those points well deserved. Every single boy played their guts out and coach Keith stated " a true team effort from only their 2nd game". Some boys were swapped around a little to give them experience in different positions, whilst others were kept in positions to settle into for the season. Others to score tries were: Angus McQueen, with 2 brilliant sweeping runs down the side line; Dougie Rayment, with some fantastic rugby following Bucky (I think he'll soon get the gist of that!!! and we'll see that same try plenty of times over); Jack Pickering, consistently standing up and joining the line in attack to help his team mates and a barn storming try to Daniel Champion - who's going to stop Dan from 10 metres out??? Callum Smith and Angus McQueen both converted a try each. Best & Fairest points went to Daniel Buck (3), Angus McQueen (2) {You would have been sooooo proud of your eldest boy Cindy!!! has that smile left his face yet??} and Patrick Brennan (1) worked tirelessly up front all game and technically was very sound (has to be that Walla training coming out, Jon Harrison!!!) As stated earlier, a real team effort - but a special mention to Ryan Trindle who started as outside centre and then gave half back a crack, Ben Gladman, started as winger and tried hooker and also to Luke Holdcroft, whose big heart never stops trying to attempt those last minute tackles on the wing!! We only took the 15 boys to Townsville. Keith will be holding their last training session for two weeks on Tuesday from 5:30-6:30. It is hoped that all boys can make this session. Here are some photos taken by Trisha Buck. I hope you enjoy and can pick your son out of the crowd!!! We hope they enjoy their holiday break and we look forward to catching them back on the training paddock come the 8th of April......... Yours in rugby Norah Eagle Boys Under 16s defeated Grammar School Gold by forfeit Win !! Win !! Win !! Now this would be nice if we ran on the field. A win by forfeit for our Eagle Boys U16s this week, Grammar Gold could not field a team. A very disappointed team were great support for the U14s running water and giving advice from the sideline. U14s had a great win over Grammar Black. Good news is we will play on Tuesday night in Townsville against Southside. We have a bus booked to leave the Boys Dorms at BTC at 4.15pm. Thanks so much for everyones support. The boys are really eager to get on the paddock and play rugby before the holidays. In case anyone is wondering the boys won't have to pay for their bus and game fees again and hopefully everyone can make it. If not let me know. Can the local boys have a think about training through the holidays. If there is enough comittment than I'm sure it will be arranged. I'll be at the game with my loudest Bulls cheering voice and Craigs new video camera!!! See you Tuesday, Cathy March 7, 2008 A&D Auto Electrical Under 14s 5 - Brothers 10 How can I possibly sleep after a game like tonight's!!!!!! 16 of the A&D Auto Electrical Under 14s turned up to the Bulls home ground in Charters Towers to play the first game of rugby for the year. All boys were nervous as all hell but proudly ran out of the dressing rooms to warm up in their brand new jersey's brought by Arthur & Diane Wright. (I must start taking photos!!) Coaches Keith Blaikie and Greg Smith were proud of the lads from the very start. With only 5 of the original Under 14s from last year, we realise we have a very young team to start the season with, but never-the-less, did these boys stand up and show the opposing team where they were from???? You bet they did!! The end score was 10-5 to Brothers but it could have very easily been a lot closer. Brothers did very well to keep our attacking boys from the line but in weeks to come, I'm sure the tide will change. Newcomers Harry Campbell and Josiah Phillott (both boys have brothers playing in the Eagle Boys Under 16's) played good running rugby, whilst Luke Holdcroft tackled his little heart out on the wing. Dougie Rayment went well as fly-half as did Jared Clements in the half back role. Callum Smith made the world of difference in the line-outs whilst Patrick Brennan also gave the Brothers boys something to think about up front. The coach usually awards a 3,2,1 Best & Fairest points after the game. The points this week went to 4 fellas who played their guts out and truly lifted the younger lads to aspire to have a successful season. Matthew Douglas (3),Try scoring machine Daniel Buck (1), Daniel Champion (1) and Jack Pickering (1). All four boys played out of their skins and Keith found it impossible not to give all four boys points - that's why 3 of them are on 1 point each!! BUT in saying this - each and everyone of these boys should hold their heads high and be proud of their achievement tonight. Many thanks to all the parents who came along to watch - this means the world to your boys - and also to our proud Sponsors, Arthur and Diane of A&D Auto Electrical. WHAT A GREAT NIGHT OF RUGBY - did I mention the Eagle Boys Under 16's had a wonderful 12-0 win over Brothers????? but that's another story!!! Must go to bed now GO THE BULLS!!!!!!!!!!!! Yours in Rugby, Norah Eagle Boys Under 16s 12 - Brothers 0 Go Bullies! What a heart stopping game with all the controversy and excitement of a team with a clear goal to go somewhere. The U16 Eagles Boys Rugby Union Team Charters Towers will have sent a shiver through their opposition. The team of inaugural juniors that took the field 2 years ago have developed and matured as rugby players under the guidance of Ted Vinson, Greg Smith and Keith Blaikie into a team of fine players. With only a handful of newcomers to the team since 2006 the whole team have bonded and learnt alot. Was a great crowd to support our Eagle Boys Under 16s and they love the support. Awesome that the boys performed for the sponsors and put a well earned win under their belts to open the season. From the Captain......I believe that we have come along way from the little league boys we were back in 06 and Friday night we demonstrated this with a 12 - 0 win over the Brothers who only last year beat us to 50 - 0 almost every game . Defensively we were unbeatable with huge tackles by Tyler Bode and Russell West,. but you know what they say to have a good offence you need a good defence and that was certainly the case for us not letting in any tries and gradually wearing them down to come away with two tries and a conversion with Taylor Smith and Zac Santo our only two try scorers. All boys played a very good game and played as a team which made the victory even sweeter. "Go the mongrels" - Ewen McLennan from Seb P 'it's hard to run through a bull' From Smithy..... A great start to the season for the Eagle Boy's 16's with good ball retention and several phases of play before letting Brothers touch the ball. The backs: Strong defence from all but in particular from Tyler Bode when Brothers were about to pounce. Excellent open running from Zac Santo and first try of the season. Good game from Jimmy Blacklock and the combination with Tom Vinson at half will be the cornerstone of the backline. The forwards: Again great defence from all in the pack, it's not often a Brothers Team doesn't score a try. They hammered our line continuously but the Bulls held them out right down to the final whistle. This applies to the backs as well. The power tackling from Russell West was beautiful to watch and the commitment from the bull pack to the ruck and maul was what maintained possession. Good work in the tight by Stuart Pegler and Connor O'Reagain, good running from Seb Phillott & Dylan Stanley, nice try to Taylor Smith for backing up Zac Santo's burst up the side and chip over. The scrum went well thanks to Ewen McLennan's step up to the front row. The lineout will need a bit of work. We did have some negatives but will deal with these at training and attempt to fix most of those. Final score 12-0 Coaches Points: Jimmy Blacklock 3, Russell West 2, Seb Phillott, Dylan Stanley, Stuart Pegler and Tyler Bode 1 Referees Points: Seb Phillott 2 WAY TO GO BULLIES GO HARD SUNSHINE Cath Interested in joining in 2008?
